Using Recycled Components and Saving Water
Global Supply Chain Powered by Renewable Energy
Reducing Landfill Waste by 600,000 Tons
Apple announced on the 17th that it has reduced global greenhouse gas emissions by more than 60% compared to 10 years ago. Ahead of Earth Day on April 22, Apple released an environmental progress report summarizing its achievements in eco-friendly management.
First, it stated that it has reduced global greenhouse gas emissions by more than 60% compared to 2015 levels. This achievement is part of the 'Apple 2030' goal to achieve carbon neutrality across its entire carbon footprint within five years.
Lisa Jackson, Apple’s Vice President of Environment, Policy, and Social Initiatives, said, "Apple is using more renewable energy and recycled materials than ever before in product manufacturing, conserving water resources worldwide, preventing waste, and making significant investments in nature."
She added, "As we approach 2030, achieving our goals will require even greater effort," and emphasized, "We recognize the urgency of the matter and will achieve our goals through innovation and collaboration."
Last year, Apple focused on reducing its carbon footprint by converting its supply chain power sources to renewable electricity and designing products with more recycled materials.
Currently, Apple’s global supply chain operates with 17.8GW of renewable energy. It is in the process of transitioning to 100% renewable energy for the production of Apple products by 2030.
Additionally, Apple announced that 26 direct semiconductor partners have committed to reducing at least 90% of fluorinated greenhouse gases at Apple-related production facilities by 2030. Furthermore, Apple uses 99% recycled rare earth elements in all magnets and 99% recycled cobalt in all batteries designed by Apple.
Last year, partners participating in Apple’s 'Zero Waste Program' reduced approximately 600,000 tons of landfill waste. Since the program’s launch in 2015, a total of 3.6 million tons of landfill waste has been reduced, equivalent to preventing the creation of 4.5 million square meters of landfill sites.
Meanwhile, earlier this year, Apple unveiled a new MacBook Air with over 55% recycled materials by weight, the highest proportion among all Apple products.
