Jeollanam-do is solidifying its position as the home of K-food by launching a large-scale "Jeollanam-do Agro-Fisheries Food Promotion Event" in partnership with H Mart, the largest Korean supermarket in North America, in response to U.S. tariff policies.

On the 16th (local time), Jeollanam-do held the opening ceremony for the "Jeollanam-do Agro-Fisheries Food Promotion Event" at the H Mart Duluth branch in Atlanta, Georgia.

The event was attended by Park Changhwan, Vice Governor for Economic Affairs of Jeollanam-do, Shim Sangbong, Executive Director of H Mart, Lee Seonghee, President of the Jeollanam-do Small and Medium Business and Job Economy Promotion Agency, Chae Sanghyeon, Secretary General of the Jeollanam-do Food Export Association, as well as related officials and local consumers.

H Mart is the largest global supermarket in North America, with more than 120 stores in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and other regions. This promotional event is being held simultaneously at four branches, centered on the Duluth branch in Georgia.

More than 80 diverse products produced in Jeollanam-do, including popular items such as yujacha (citron tea), gim (seaweed), hongo (fermented skate), shiitake mushrooms, hangwa (traditional Korean confectionery), sikhye (sweet rice drink), and namul (seasoned vegetables), as well as newly introduced products such as gulbi (dried yellow corvina), coin broth, and meal kits for doenjang-guk, cheonggukjang, and bibimbap, will be introduced to local consumers.

In 2024, Jeollanam-do's exports of agro-fisheries products to the U.S. reached $150 million, a 33.8% increase from the previous year. As of February this year, exports amounted to $25 million, showing a record growth rate of 49.6% compared to the same period last year. Popular export items include gim (seaweed), fruit beverages, pears, yujacha (citron tea), and traditional sauces.

Park Changhwan, Vice Governor for Economic Affairs of Jeollanam-do, stated, "Recently, food exporters are increasingly concerned about the U.S. government's tariff barriers," adding, "Jeollanam-do will do its utmost to proactively respond to tariff barriers and support the export of agro-fisheries products."

This promotional event will be held at four H Mart locations in Georgia until May 1, with plans to hold a large-scale promotional event at H Mart stores nationwide across the U.S. around September.
