American quantum computing company IonQ announced on the 16th (local time) that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Korean satellite communication antenna solution provider Intellian Technologies. This collaboration aims to utilize quantum network technology in the satellite communication field.
Through this cooperation, IonQ plans to explore how secure quantum networking technology can transform satellite communications. Nicolo De Masi, CEO of IonQ, stated, "Together with Intellian Tech, we will lead innovation in secure quantum network communications between satellites and between satellites and ground stations," adding, "In the long term, we have a vision to develop quantum time synchronization technology as an alternative to GPS."
Sung Sang-yeop, CEO of Intellian Tech, said, "We are pleased to redefine the future of satellite technology with IonQ," and added, "We will jointly explore a new technological paradigm that enhances the quality of satellite communication services used daily by countless customers."
This agreement is part of IonQ's efforts to strengthen strategic partnerships encompassing Korean companies, government, and academia, supporting the development of the domestic quantum economy. IonQ was co-founded in 2015 by Professor Jeongsang Kim of Duke University and Professor Christopher Monroe of the University of Maryland, and over the past six years, it has collaborated with Korean government agencies and academia to support the establishment of national quantum strategies and the commercialization of quantum research.
In addition, IonQ is conducting research on next-generation battery and autonomous driving technologies based on collaborations with Samsung Electronics and Hyundai Motor Company, and supports quantum research and professional workforce development through agreements with Seoul National University and Sungkyunkwan University. IonQ also plans to pursue a strategic partnership in the quantum field with SK Telecom. IonQ stated, "We plan to continue accelerating innovation and securing global quantum technology competitiveness through ongoing cooperation with Korea."
