Jeollanam-do held a '2026 Gim Illegal Aquaculture Facility Preemptive Prevention Kickoff Meeting' at the Jeonnam Institute of Marine and Fisheries Science on the 16th, sharing plans for the maintenance of illegal Gim aquaculture farms and enforcement directions by city and county.
At the meeting, 25 participants including officials in charge of aquaculture farm maintenance and illegal fishery guidance and enforcement from Jeollanam-do and 12 cities and counties discussed the direction for maintenance of the 2026 Gim aquaculture farms, measures to eradicate illegal facilities in the early stages of Gim aquaculture, and guidance and enforcement plans to establish order in the aquaculture sector.
It was analyzed that there have been 122 cases of illegal Gim aquaculture facilities detected in the region over the past three years. In particular, 79% of these cases were concentrated in major Gim production areas such as Goheung-gun, Wando-gun, and Jindo-gun, highlighting the trend of illegal aquaculture being focused in these key locations.
As of the 9th, the cumulative production of Gim in Jeollanam-do for the 2025 season reached 489,000 tons, a 27% increase from the previous year. However, the auction price has been declining to 1,567 KRW per kg, indicating increased price volatility. As a result, there is a growing need to improve the production structure by addressing illegal Gim aquaculture facilities.
Going forward, Jeollanam-do plans to hold meetings with vessel operators installing Gim aquaculture facilities, focusing on high-risk waters in major Gim-producing cities and counties. In addition, starting from the end of July, when anchor facilities for Gim aquaculture farms begin to be installed in earnest, the province will conduct intensive on-site guidance and enforcement activities in cooperation with the Coast Guard and related agencies to completely block illegal Gim aquaculture facilities.
