LG CNS Enters US Smart City Market... Establishing EV Charging and Smart Streetlights

Establishing Electric Vehicle Charging Stations and Energy Control Systems in Brooklyn, New York
Building Smart Pole Infrastructure in Hogansville

LG CNS has entered the U.S. market with smart city technology. This marks LG CNS's first public contract secured locally in the United States.

On the 17th, LG CNS announced that it recently signed a contract with the New York City Economic Development Corporation for a "pilot project to build an electric vehicle charging station (EVC) and control system," and a contract with Hogansville City, Georgia, for a "smart streetlight and control system construction project."

First, the contract with New York City is for the construction and operation of an electric vehicle charging station at the "Brooklyn Army Terminal," an industrial complex in New York City. The Brooklyn Army Terminal is a startup hub supported by New York City that allows companies to test technologies in real environments before commercializing products and services. LG CNS became involved in this project through the "Digital Transformation (DX) Partnership Memorandum of Understanding (MOU)" signed with New York City in November 2023.

LG CNS will build and operate an electric vehicle charging station at the Brooklyn Army Terminal along with a charging/discharging control system and an application (app) that allows real-time monitoring of energy usage data. Users can use the app to check charging status, reserve charging stations, and verify real-time availability of spots within the charging station.

LG CNS utilizes its proprietary smart city platform, "CityHub Building," as the control system. CityHub Building is a system based on Internet of Things (IoT) technology that monitors and controls various facilities within a building. It enables real-time monitoring of facility malfunctions and building power consumption through remote control of various sensors.

Based on this contract, LG CNS plans to pursue projects supplying Level 3 ultra-fast electric vehicle chargers and energy storage systems (ESS) to New York City in the future. Additionally, LG CNS intends to continuously strengthen cooperation with New York City in the smart city sector.

LG CNS also signed a contract with Hogansville City for the smart streetlight and control system construction project. Through this project, LG CNS will install smart streetlights and related infrastructure in Hogansville’s downtown area and parks.

Smart streetlights are urban infrastructure enhanced with IoT functions added to traffic lights or streetlights. They incorporate smart city technologies such as lighting control, public Wi-Fi, artificial intelligence (AI) closed-circuit television (CCTV), and environmental sensing sensors. These systems play roles in monitoring traffic conditions and public safety, as well as collecting various urban data.

The control system to be built will manage multiple smart streetlights and will also operate based on CityHub Building. LG CNS will install electric vehicle chargers, digital signage, and emergency call buttons connected to police stations on the smart streetlights.

Starting with this project, LG CNS plans to expand its business to nearby cities in Georgia such as LaGrange and West Point. Shin Hyun-kyun, CEO of LG CNS, stated, "The smart city infrastructure construction project in the U.S. is a good example of LG CNS’s accumulated DX capabilities and know-how being recognized in the global market. We will lead the expansion of eco-friendly smart city infrastructure in the U.S. and the creation of a sustainable future."
