Seongdong-gu (Mayor Jeong Won-oh) announced that it will hold the '45th Disability Day' commemorative event at Wangsimni Square starting from 10 a.m. on April 18.

This event is organized by the Promotion Committee, composed of various disability organizations including the Seongdong Comprehensive Welfare Center for the Disabled, and is expected to be a festival where people with disabilities, their families, facility workers, and residents can all enjoy together.

The event will begin with a fashion show and congratulatory songs, followed by an opening declaration and awards for meritorious persons with disabilities. In the 'Seongdong Heungbanjang Contest,' people with disabilities will showcase their talents such as dance, singing, and musical instrument performances that they have been diligently preparing.

In particular, the 'Seongdong Heungbanjang Contest,' which started for the first time in 2023, has seen increasing participation every year and has become the most popular program among the Disability Day commemorative events.

Prior to the Disability Day commemorative event, on April 4, a 'Our Rights Story' was held where 12 speakers with disabilities presented on disability rights. An invited lecture by Moon Seok-young, an activist from Seoul People First for the promotion of disability human rights, was also conducted to raise awareness and improve perceptions of disabilities.

As of February 2025, the number of registered persons with disabilities residing in the district is 10,699, accounting for 3.9% of the total population of Seongdong-gu. Accordingly, the district is promoting various projects to improve the quality of life for people with disabilities, such as insurance enrollment and support for electric assistive devices, installation of customized ramps, and operation of a specialized library for people with developmental disabilities.

Jeong Won-oh, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, said, "I hope that the voices of marginalized people with disabilities at this Disability Day commemorative event will resonate strongly and become a time for understanding and empathy regarding disabilities," and added, "We will continue to do our best to create a discrimination-free Seongdong."
