The Gwangju City Council (Chairperson Shin Sujeong) announced on the 16th that it had submitted three proposals urging amendments to relevant laws, including 'Support for Health Checkups for Retired Firefighters,' 'Expansion of Fire Insurance Support to Alley-Type Shopping Districts,' and 'Expansion of Onnuri Gift Certificate Usage to General Private Academies,' at the 3rd Extraordinary Meeting of the National Council of City and Provincial Council Chairpersons held in Incheon on the 15th. These proposals were formally adopted as official agenda items.
The Gwangju City Council highlighted the repeated health risks faced by firefighters at disaster sites and stressed the need for a systematic mechanism to support health checkups for 10 years after retirement. Accordingly, the council submitted a proposal urging amendments to relevant laws to guarantee the health rights of firefighters and enable systematic health management even after retirement.
In addition, the council called for expanding fire insurance support, which is currently limited to traditional markets, to alley-type shopping districts where small stores are concentrated, thereby providing more practical support measures for small business owners. The intent is to strengthen the institutional foundation so that small business owners can operate in a safer environment.
Furthermore, the council urged amendments to relevant laws to expand the use of Onnuri Gift Certificates to the educational service sector of general private academies, aiming to reduce the financial burden on parents, revitalize the local economy, and enhance policy fairness with the currently used local gift certificates (local currency) at general private academies.
The three proposals suggested and adopted by the Gwangju City Council will be officially delivered to the National Assembly and the government through the National Council of City and Provincial Council Chairpersons.
Chairperson Shin Sujeong emphasized, "We will continue to actively strive to ensure that voices from the field are reflected in policy," and added, "I hope the adoption of these agenda items will provide practical help for the welfare and safety of firefighters, small business owners, and local residents, as well as the revitalization of the local economy."
Meanwhile, the city council plans to continue its active and ongoing policy proposals to improve the quality of life for citizens and promote community development.
