Space Industry Hub... Will the Second Space Center Be Built in Jeonnam? Kim Youngrok Jeonnam Governor

Kim Youngrok, Governor of Jeollanam-do, visited the Korea Aerospace Administration in Sacheon, Gyeongsangnam-do on the 16th to meet with Yoon Youngbin, Commissioner of the Korea Aerospace Administration, and discussed key issues such as attracting the second space center to Goheung, Jeollanam-do, and establishing a space launch vehicle industry cluster.

Regarding the "Creation of a Space Launch Vehicle Industry Convergence Cluster," which was identified as a core presidential campaign pledge, he requested that government policies reflect and actively support the attraction of the second space center near the Naro Space Center.

He especially emphasized the importance of maintaining consistency in the policy for fostering specialized launch vehicle zones, the synergy with the existing Naro Space Center, the potential for full-cycle linkage including launch vehicle testing, assembly, and launch, and the advantages of the location.

He also requested policy support and joint cooperation from the Korea Aerospace Administration to ensure that the Science Complex project, which Jeollanam-do is actively promoting, is selected as a candidate for the preliminary feasibility study.

The main content of the project includes the creation of an education, research, and exhibition complex based on space science. The plan is to increase public interest in the space industry through the preservation of the history of space exploration development and the establishment of space experience facilities.

To prepare for the era of New Space and reflect the needs of private companies, he also proposed that new projects be included as national government-supported projects in 2026.

Governor Kim Youngrok said, "The space industry cluster centered on the Goheung Naro Space Center will become a key hub for national balanced development and preparation for the future space era," and added, "We will do our best to realize a global space powerhouse by establishing a full-cycle space industry ecosystem, from the manufacturing and assembly of launch vehicles to their launch."
