Chairperson Choi Min-hee of the Science and Technology Committee Proposes Bill to Establish the 'Ministry of Science, Technology, Information, and Communication AI'... Broadcasting Duties Transferred to the Korea Communications Commission Yonhap News

Minhee Choi, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea (Chairperson of the National Assembly Science, Technology, Information and Broadcasting and Communications Committee, representing Namyangju Gap, Gyeonggi), on the 16th, took the lead in proposing the "Partial Amendment to the Government Organization Act" to expand and reorganize the current Ministry of Science and ICT into the "Ministry of Science, Technology, Information, Communications, and Artificial Intelligence."

This amendment elevates the current Ministry of Science and ICT to the Ministry of Science, Technology, Information, Communications, and AI (Ministry of Science, Technology, Information, Communications, and AI), granting the minister the status of Deputy Prime Minister to comprehensively coordinate AI and science and technology policies at the national level.

Additionally, the amendment includes transferring broadcasting-related duties previously handled by the Ministry of Science and ICT to the Korea Communications Commission. This measure aims to strengthen the independence and fairness of broadcasting policies. In the postal service sector, the amendment also establishes a dedicated organization called the "Postal Agency" to create a systematic foundation for postal service operations.

Representative Choi emphasized, "Since broadcasting policies and AI and science and technology policies are fundamentally different in nature, there is a need to reorganize government structures more efficiently," adding, "The core of this amendment is to have the Korea Communications Commission fully responsible for broadcasting policies, while the Ministry of Science, Technology, Information, Communications, and AI focuses on promoting AI and science and technology industries."
