Pohang City Holds Interim Report Meeting on Marine Waste Management Policy Research Project

Proposals for Introducing Advanced Technologies such as AI-Based Data Analysis and Drones

On the 16th, the Pohang City Government held an interim report meeting for the 'Pohang City Marine Debris Management Policy Establishment Study' in the City Hall's main conference room, providing a forum for discussions on measures to reduce marine debris.

The meeting was attended by Son Jeongho, Director of the Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Bureau, as well as city council members Jeon Juhyung and Cho Youngwon, and heads of related departments. Participants shared the current status of marine debris management and engaged in in-depth discussions on sustainable collection and disposal strategies.

This study aims to establish a systematic reduction plan for approximately 3,000 tons of marine debris generated annually, reflecting the geographical characteristics of Pohang City, which has a long coastline stretching 214 kilometers.

Notably, the study presents not only a geographical and environmental analysis of marine waste and operational plans for collection and disposal, but also proposes the use of advanced technologies such as AI-based data analysis and drones for establishing mid- to long-term strategies.

During the meeting, technologies were introduced that analyze marine debris by type using drones to identify waste that is difficult to spot with the naked eye, as well as an AI program called 'Ocean Cloud' that predicts ocean current flows and potential debris generation points.

By utilizing this system, more precise monitoring becomes possible, and the efficiency of future responses is expected to improve significantly.

Son Jeongho, Director of the Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Bureau, stated, "Marine debris is an increasingly serious issue, especially in connection with climate change, so it must be addressed from a long-term perspective. Based on this study, Pohang City will move beyond simple waste collection to implement policies that create value from marine resources."
