Memorial Space Created in Book Cafe with Staff Participation
Pledging Action to Ensure “It Never Happens Again”
The Gwangju Office of Education gathered to commemorate the 11th anniversary of the Sewol Ferry disaster. On the 16th, the office held a memorial event at the first-floor book cafe of its main building, with all staff members participating to remember the victims and pledge to create a safer educational environment.
Participants wrote their own memorial messages and pledges for action on name card-sized postcards printed with the names of the 304 Sewol Ferry victims. The postcards, bearing messages such as "We will always remember and strive for a safe country for everyone," "As an adult and an educator, I deeply feel the weight of the Sewol Ferry's name," and "May you soar freely... We will not forget," were displayed in the exhibition area.

The postcards and paper boats left by staff members will be on display at the main building's book cafe until the 18th.
In addition to this memorial event, the Office of Education is commemorating the 11th anniversary by displaying yellow ribbons, hanging banners, installing pinwheels, and operating a cyber memorial hall.
Superintendent Lee Jungseon said, "To ensure that the Sewol Ferry tragedy is never repeated, all members of the education community must work together to take action and lead in prevention," adding, "We will do our utmost to comfort the souls of the students and to create safe schools and a safe society."
