Gwangju Seo-gu to Hold 'May 18 Human Rights Field Tour' from 17th to 24th

Field Tour for MZ Generation Public Officials
Visits to Sites Including Jeonil Building 245

In commemoration of the 45th anniversary of the May 18 Democratization Movement, the Seo-gu District Office of Gwangju will conduct the 'May 18 Human Rights Field Tour' for approximately 90 public officials from the MZ generation (born in the early 1980s to early 2000s) over three sessions from the 17th to the 24th.

According to Seo-gu on the 16th, this program, under the theme of 'A Time Travel of Memory and Empathy,' was designed to provide MZ generation public officials, who did not experience the May 18 history, an opportunity to reflect on the values of democracy and human rights, and to grow as public officials who communicate with residents through broad intergenerational empathy.

To help participants better understand, Seo-gu plans to visit May 18 commemorative sites with explanations from cultural interpreters, including the 'May 18 History Park,' which embodies the spirit of democracy and human rights; the 'May 18 Liberty Park,' which captures the resistance of citizens against military dictatorship; and 'Jeonil Building 245,' which preserves traces of helicopter shootings.

In particular, at May 18 Liberty Park, participants will watch a reenactment of the events of 1980 and make 'Jumeokbap,' a symbol of solidarity and sharing, to experience the courage and community spirit of the citizens at that time. At Jeonil Building 245, they will observe bullet marks from helicopter shootings and historical records, providing an opportunity to reflect on the history of the democratization movement and the significance of democracy and human rights.

Kim Ikang, head of Seo-gu District Office, stated, "May 18 is a history created by the courage and sacrifice of citizens striving for democracy. I hope this field tour becomes a time of remembrance and empathy for MZ generation public officials, serving as an opportunity for them to become public officials who practice the values of democracy and human rights."
