Yuseong District in Daejeon announced on the 16th that it had conducted a survey on socially isolated households and identified 70 individuals at risk of lonely death, including those categorized as reclusive.
From March 3 to 21, the district carried out the "2025 1st Social Isolation Household Status Survey" targeting 300 households at risk of isolation (283 households responded), and discovered 70 individuals at risk of lonely death, including 36 reclusive individuals.
The survey results showed that men accounted for 67%, more than twice the rate of women, and the risk of lonely death was highest among middle-aged and older adults in their 50s and above.
Additionally, 75% of responding households reported having considered suicide within the past six months, and 90% said they had spent most of their time inside their homes for more than half a year.
Based on the survey results, the district plans to implement various measures reflecting the characteristics and risk factors of isolated households, such as regular wellbeing checks through the AI-based "Anbudundun" service, meal box support and art therapy, social network-building programs, and housing environment improvement projects.
Jung Yongrae, head of Yuseong District Office, stated, "Social isolation and lonely death are not just individual issues, but challenges that the entire society must address together," adding, "We will establish support measures for middle-aged isolated households and implement specialized support programs for young people at risk of lonely death."
