As the amount of ultraviolet rays increases during spring and autumn, the use of sunscreen is on the rise. However, some UV-blocking ingredients may affect the human body and marine environment, requiring consumer caution.

On the 17th, the Korea Consumer Agency investigated the UV-blocking ingredient (4-Methylbenzylidene Camphor, 4-MBC) in 40 sunscreen products distributed in the market, and found that two products exceeded the usage limit.

4-Methylbenzylidene Camphor is an organic UV-blocking ingredient that blocks ultraviolet rays. When absorbed in large amounts into the body, it can act as an endocrine disruptor and affect hormones. The European Union plans to ban its use in cosmetics starting next May and prohibit the distribution of products containing 4-MBC from May 2026.

The products exceeding the 4-MBC usage limit (4%) in this investigation were 'Diomer Daily Sun Cream' (70㎖) and 'Barangsori Bodamdodam Haeoreum Garigae' (70㎖). Both products were found to contain 5% 4-MBC.

The responsible seller of these products, Chocolate Cosmetic, has stopped sales and disposed of remaining stock following the Korea Consumer Agency's corrective recommendation. They have also decided to refund the purchase price for sold products.

The Korea Consumer Agency urged consumers who purchased these products to stop using them immediately and to apply for consultation through the 1372 Consumer Counseling Center (dial 1372 without area code) or Consumer24 if any damage has occurred due to these products.
