Artist Lee Sangbae from Shenzhen Holds Seventh Solo Exhibition 'Cheongchogoah' in Mungyeong

This exhibition, themed "Cheongchogoah," which means "pure and elegant beauty that is not flashy," will showcase around 30 works that blend the spirit of traditional literati painting with modern formative experimentation. The opening reception will be held at 5 p.m. on the 22nd.

Lee Sangbae has been actively engaged in creative activities, including winning the Grand Prize at the Korea Modern Literati Painting Competition, producing the portrait of General Lim Jeongsik, and participating in major and special exhibitions of Korean literati painting. He has also contributed to the popularization of literati painting by serving as a consultant for dramas such as "Yi San" and "Guam Heojun."

His works utilize the Jeoljigudo technique, which faithfully follows the "Golbeopyongpil" (bone method of brushwork) and "Gyeongyeongwichi" (composition and placement), two of the Six Principles of Painting proposed by Xie He of the Southern Qi dynasty in China.

This is a style of literati painting favored by mid-Joseon dynasty scholars, in which parts of the composition are deliberately omitted, and flowers, branches, or fish are cut off at the edges of the canvas, creating a sense of depth and refined aesthetics.

Additionally, by combining the "Gurukbeop" (outline method) and "Molgolbeop" (boneless method), his technique expresses the process of forms appearing and disappearing, presenting an abstract yet expressionistic painterly beauty.

A representative from the Mungyeong Cultural Center said, "This exhibition consists of high-quality works that reinterpret the spirit of traditional literati painting with a modern sensibility. It will be a meaningful occasion to convey the artistry and depth of Korean literati painting to the local community."
