"Core Strategy Supporting National Competitiveness"
LG Energy Solution Holds the Most Patents Among Global Battery Companies
Announces "Strong Response" to Indiscriminate Technology Infringement
On the 15th, Hanseon Lee, Head of the Patent Group at LG Energy Solution, made this statement during a presentation titled "Efforts and Limits in Creating High-Quality Patents by Companies" at the '2025 1st Intellectual Property Strategy Discussion (Strategy Forum)'. Lee emphasized that securing "Premium Patents" is crucial to staying ahead in the global competition of national strategic industries such as the secondary battery industry.

Premium patents refer to high-quality patents that broadly protect core technologies while having a low likelihood of invalidation, thereby enhancing a company's sustainability in the competition for technological supremacy.
Lee stated, "It is essential for the Republic of Korea to secure 'Premium Patents' at a faster pace than major overseas battlegrounds such as the United States and Europe in nationally critical industries where Korea is a global leader," adding, "Premium patents are not merely corporate assets but a core strategy supporting national competitiveness. To address this, related entities including companies, the Korean Intellectual Property Office, courts, and the intellectual property industry must collaborate across all areas such as 'creation, utilization, and protection' within their respective domains."
Recently, competition has intensified in the secondary battery sector due to the rapid pursuit and patent expansion strategies of Chinese companies, many of which have quickly secured global patents by utilizing fast patent examination systems.
LG Energy Solution has long established a culture of 'Intellectual Property (IP) Research and Development (R&D)', building a patent portfolio alongside technology development. As of February this year, it holds approximately 40,000 registered patents and about 72,000 patent applications, the largest number among battery companies worldwide.
The problem is that as the global battery market rapidly grows and competition among companies intensifies, cases of technology theft by latecomer companies are sharply increasing. Currently, the number of 'strategic patents' held by LG Energy Solution that competitors have infringed or are expected to infringe reaches about 1,000, with over 580 patents confirmed to have been infringed by competitors.
In response, last year LG Energy Solution announced that if indiscriminate technology infringement continues without proper licensing agreements, it will take strong measures such as patent infringement injunction lawsuits.
An LG Energy Solution official said, "We are strengthening global litigation capabilities by securing local experts in key markets," and added, "We plan to systematically manage global intellectual property rights."
