Active Engagement with the International Community to Attract the 2027 ICLEI World Congress to Pohang
Pohang City has officially begun engaging with the international community to attract the '2027 ICLEI World Congress'.
From the 14th to the 16th, Pohang City participated in the '2025 World Local Government Climate Congress' held at KINTEX in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province, aiming to strengthen its global climate leadership and build international consensus for hosting the 2027 World Congress.
This congress is co-hosted by ICLEI (Local Governments for Sustainability) and Gyeonggi Province, under the theme 'Science-Based Green Transition for All', providing a platform for local governments worldwide to share climate crisis response policies and discuss cooperation strategies.
With more than 80 mayors and high-ranking officials from over 50 local governments worldwide in attendance, Pohang City participated to reinforce its position as a leading city in climate crisis response and to expand its global network through exchanges with representatives of local governments around the world.
Mayor Lee Kangdeok attended the opening ceremony and official events of the ICLEI World Local Government Climate Congress on the 15th.
Notably, on the 15th at the ICLEI Korea Congress, Pohang City joined the 'Local Government Network for People-Centered Just Transition', expressing its commitment to sharing sustainable urban policies with the international community.
At the event, Mayor Lee presented the vision for 'Pohang, a City of Sustainable Green Growth', sharing examples of transitioning from a steel city to an eco-friendly industrial city and implementing citizen-participatory policies.
He also served as chair of the 'In Harmony with Nature' session, themed 'Urban Climate Action in Harmony with Nature', sharing Pohang's case studies and the session's topic, delivering a strong message to the international community on sustainable urban transition.
Additionally, during the congress, Pohang City focused on expanding international consensus and demonstrated its strong commitment to hosting the 2027 ICLEI World Congress through high-level meetings.
Mayor Lee held consecutive meetings with Katrin Stjernfeldt Jammeh, President of ICLEI and Mayor of Malmo, Sweden; Gino Van Begin, Secretary General of ICLEI; and Damian Pereira, Chief Delegate of Quebec, Canada, explaining Pohang's qualifications and international capabilities to host the 2027 World Congress and seeking their support.
Mayor Lee Kangdeok stated, "Pohang has proven new possibilities in responding to the climate crisis by transforming from a center of the steel industry to a carbon-neutral city," adding, "By hosting the 2027 ICLEI World Congress in Pohang, we will design a sustainable future together with the world."
Since last year, Pohang City has been strengthening cooperation with domestic and international environmental networks to lay the foundation for hosting the congress, and plans to submit its application to host the 2027 World Congress to the ICLEI World Headquarters (Germany) on April 30.
