'Where Is the Most Desirable Place to Live in Seoul?'... This City Tops Resident Happiness Index

2024 Seoul Survey Results
Dongjak-gu Ranks Highest in Happiness Index and Citizen Pride

The happiness index of residents in Dongjak-gu, Seoul, was found to be the highest among the 25 autonomous districts of Seoul. Dongjak-gu (Mayor Park Il-ha) announced on the 15th that it ranked 'No. 1 in Seoul' in key urban policy indicators, including the happiness index, according to the recently released '2024 Seoul Survey' results.

'Where Is the Most Desirable Place to Live in Seoul?'... This City Tops Resident Happiness Index Park Il-ha, Mayor of Dongjak District, is talking with residents at the 'Good Walking Day' event held in Boramae Park in the district last October. Provided by Dongjak District.

The Seoul Survey, conducted annually since 2003 under the auspices of Seoul City, aims to understand citizens' perceptions, lifestyles, and values. This year's survey was conducted from August to September last year, targeting 20,000 households (36,280 household members).

The district ranked first in nine categories among the survey indicators and also placed high in the newly added category of 'Neighborhood Satisfaction.' Dongjak-gu was ranked at the top in happiness index, pride as Seoul citizens, safety during nighttime walking, satisfaction with transportation (bus) usage, satisfaction with the pedestrian environment in residential areas, presence of social support networks, educational opportunities, employment opportunities, and neighborhood satisfaction (exercise).

Notably, while the happiness index declined in many autonomous districts, Dongjak-gu showed an unusual achievement by rising from 6th place back to 1st place, a so-called 'reverse trend.' It also reached the top for three consecutive years with a steep upward trend in 'pride as Seoul citizens' and 'satisfaction with transportation (bus) usage and pedestrian environment in residential areas.' High scores were also received in indicators related to social fairness such as 'education and employment opportunities,' as well as 'safety during nighttime walking' and 'presence of social support networks.'

The district views these results as the outcome of Dongjak-gu’s proactive and innovative administration, including the 'Filial Call Center'-led 'Filial Package,' the 'Dongjak-gu-style maintenance project' focusing on speed and direction, bold youth housing support represented by fully occupied housing, and top-level childcare policies such as dinner lunchboxes.

Mayor Park Il-ha said, "It seems that the implementation of groundbreaking policies encompassing generations and social classes to create the 'City of the Highest Value, Dongjak' has yielded good results. We will continue to transform Dongjak-gu in all areas so that residents can feel pride and lead happy lives."
