ChatGPT Ranks First in User Growth on Mobile Index
Monthly Active Users Surpass 5 Million
Amid the ongoing popularity of 'Ghibli memes,' ChatGPT has claimed the top spot for weekly new mobile app downloads.
According to Mobile Index by IGAWorks on the 15th, from the 31st of last month to the 6th of this month, ChatGPT recorded a total of 2,727,599 new installations, the highest among all mobile apps.
Naver's separately released shopping app, Naver Plus Store, ranked second with 682,031 downloads. For the previous two weeks, Naver Plus Store had held the number one position.
Based on the number of users, ChatGPT's weekly active users during the same period increased by 3,430,955 (a growth rate of 110.05%), also securing the top spot in the rapid growth rankings.
On the 25th of last month, OpenAI launched the generative AI service 'ChatGPT-4o Image Generation.' This model combines OpenAI's multimodal AI model 'ChatGPT-4o' with an image generation model. It generates images by understanding the user's intent without the need to input commands one by one.
By uploading a photo of oneself or acquaintances, the service transforms the image into popular animation styles such as those from Japan's Ghibli Studio, Disney, and The Simpsons. Since the service launch, the generation of Ghibli-style images has become a phenomenon, gaining immense popularity.
Not only ChatGPT but also similar apps offering comparable functions are enjoying spillover benefits. Although copyright infringement controversies have been raised, this has become a widespread cultural phenomenon.
Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, mentioned that the influx of users due to ChatGPT's image generation feature has caused servers to overload to the point where graphics processing units (GPUs) are "melting down."
Last month, ChatGPT's monthly active users (MAU) in South Korea reached 5,090,965, surpassing the 5 million mark for the first time since the app's launch. In February, the MAU was 3,860,988.
