A Time to Learn 'Difference'... Gwangju Disability Rights Week Held

From Disability Awareness Classes to Commendations

The Gwangju Office of Education has launched the "Disability Rights Week" initiative to raise awareness of disability rights ahead of the 45th Disability Day (April 20). This year's event runs from April 14 to 25, under the slogan "Looking at Happiness, Embracing Everyday Life, Continuing Hope."

To promote a correct understanding of disabilities and foster an inclusive culture in educational settings, the Gwangju Office of Education is conducting a variety of programs centered around its main office, affiliated institutions, and schools of all levels.

A Time to Learn 'Difference'... Gwangju Disability Rights Week Held Gwangju Office of Education building.

Superintendent Lee Jungseon delivered an open letter to the educational community encouraging a culture of empathy towards disabilities. At the field level, practical programs are being implemented, including: ▲displaying banners to commemorate Disability Day ▲disability awareness classes (using special broadcasts) ▲distribution of lesson materials for related events ▲distribution of educational materials for disability awareness (PPTs and newspapers) ▲and mobile disability understanding classes.

Through this week, the Gwangju Office of Education hopes to spread a disability rights-friendly atmosphere in schools and for students to naturally internalize the values of diversity and inclusion.

On the 18th, awards will be presented to faculty and students who have contributed to improving disability awareness. Four individuals (three teachers and one educational administration official) will receive awards from the Minister of Education, while 19 individuals?including special education students, special education teachers, homeroom teachers of inclusive classes, administrative staff, activity support staff, and local community members?will receive awards from the Superintendent.

Superintendent Lee stated, "I hope this will be a time for us to understand each other's differences and imagine a world where everyone is respected," adding, "I look forward to our children sharing warmth in their daily lives and building a hopeful future together."
