Korean Bar Association Warns of "Serious Oversupply of Lawyers"
Rally to Be Held in Front of Ministry of Justice on the 14th
The Korean Bar Association will hold a rally on the 14th at 11:30 a.m. in front of the Ministry of Justice main gate at the Government Gwacheon Complex, urging a reduction in the number of lawyers produced.
According to the Bar Association, the number of successful candidates in the bar exam has gradually increased by more than 1,500 each year since 2013. Since 2020, more than 1,700 lawyers have been produced annually, bringing the total number of registered lawyers to 36,535. This is more than three times the number of lawyers compared to 2009, before the introduction of law schools (Law School).
A representative from the Bar Association stated, "The consolidation and reduction of similar legal professions, which was a prerequisite for the introduction of law schools, have not been implemented at all, resulting in an oversupply of lawyers being forced into low-cost client acquisition competition."
Accordingly, the Bar Association plans to urge that the number of successful candidates for the 14th bar exam be set below 1,200 at the rally. The event will proceed with a declaration and policy presentation by Kim Jeong-wook, President of the Korean Bar Association, regarding the reduction of the number of lawyers. The Bar Association said, "We will convey opinions on the problems of the indiscriminate mass production structure of lawyers."
