Yongin City to Develop 1MW Solar Power Plant on Traffic Plaza, Parking Lot, and Building Rooftops

Selected for Gyeonggi RE100 Leading Project for Two Consecutive Years... Secured 603 Million KRW in Provincial Funding
Lee: "We Will Build an Energy Transition Model Involving the Public, Private Sector, and Citizens"

Yongin City in Gyeonggi Province is promoting the installation of a 1MW-scale solar power plant considering landscape improvement at transportation plazas, public parking lots, and building roofs. The generated electricity will be supplied to semiconductor companies and others.

Yongin City announced on the 11th that it has been selected for the 'Gyeonggi RE100 Leading Project Contest' for two consecutive years, following last year. With a total investment of 2.16 billion KRW, including 603 million KRW in provincial subsidies secured through this selection, the city plans to actively promote a renewable energy infrastructure project that supports the semiconductor industry ecosystem and improves urban landscapes. 'RE100' is an international campaign encouraging companies to meet 100% of their electricity consumption with renewable energy.

This project involves installing a total of 1MW of landscape-improving solar power plants at three locations: Masung-ri Transportation Plaza in Pogok-eup, the parking lot of the Citizen Sports Center in Geumeo-ri, Pogok-eup, Cheoin-gu, and the rooftop of the Giheung Lake Rowing Stadium building.

The solar power plant at Masung-ri Transportation Plaza will be implemented using Building-Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV) modules. 'BIPV' is a method that integrates solar power equipment with building materials, where solar modules are used as exterior walls, roofs, windows, and other architectural materials. From the architectural design stage, solar modules are included, enabling the building itself to generate power.

A landscape-type canopy power plant will be installed in the Citizen Sports Center parking lot. The rooftop of the Giheung Lake Rowing Stadium building will be developed as a citizen-participatory power plant.

The project involves participation from the public sector as well as companies and citizens, including the Yongin Energy Cooperative, GQ Energy, and electricity brokerage businesses. The city will secure private investment through citizen funding to promote the project, and part of the power generation revenue will be used to establish an energy transition fund for reinvestment in the local community.

The city expects the project to achieve effects such as building a distributed energy system, realizing carbon neutrality, and enhancing the eco-friendly city brand. In particular, the generated electricity will be supplied to semiconductor companies within the jurisdiction to serve as a foundation for realizing RE100.

Lee Sang-il, Mayor of Yongin City, said, "RE100 is a timely challenge that must be realized not only by companies but also by citizens and local governments," adding, "We will successfully create an energy transition model involving the public sector, private sector, and citizens together."
