Gongju City to Install Stormwater Runoff Reduction Facilities in Jeonmak District to Prevent Urban Flooding

Completion Scheduled for Late 2028 with a Total Investment of 31.4 Billion KRW

Gongju City to Install Stormwater Runoff Reduction Facilities in Jeonmak District to Prevent Urban Flooding

Gongju City in Chungnam Province announced on the 11th that the Jeonmak District in Gongju has been finally selected for the "2026 Excellent Stormwater Runoff Reduction Facility Installation Project" organized by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety.

According to the city, stormwater runoff reduction facilities are designed to prevent urban flooding by allowing rainwater from typhoons or heavy downpours to either infiltrate underground or be temporarily stored. These facilities are environmentally friendly as they enable the use of rainwater as a groundwater resource.

The newly selected Jeonmak District project will install large-scale facilities in the area of 477-2, Singwan-dong, Gongju City, including one pump (100㎥/min), one stormwater storage facility (with a capacity of 13,000㎥), and stormwater pipeline maintenance, among others.

The Jeonmak District experienced flooding due to rising external water levels of the Geumgang River and Jeongan Stream, as well as aging stormwater pipelines during the heavy rainfall in 2023. The new project is expected to significantly reduce the risk of flooding in this area.

This project is the second phase following the first phase of the Singwan District stormwater storage facility installation, with a total budget of 31.4 billion KRW, including 15.7 billion KRW in national funding.

The city plans to begin basic and detailed design services in September, proceed with site compensation negotiations from 2026, start construction in 2027, and aim for completion by the end of 2028.

Once completed, the project is expected to address urban flooding caused by rising external water levels at the confluence of the Geumgang River and Jeongan Stream and insufficient stormwater pipeline capacity, thereby protecting a total area of 233,660㎡ from flooding.

Mayor Choi Woncheol stated, "Gongju City is the only city in the Chungcheong region to be selected for this project, which is the result of actively explaining and persuading the Ministry of the Interior and Safety of the project's necessity. We will continue to do our best to protect the lives and safety of our citizens from natural disasters caused by climate change."
