Chairman Lee, an alumnus from the class of 1980 at Korea Aerospace University, crossed over to Indonesia, where he had no connections, right after graduating in 1988 with only $10,000, becoming the protagonist of a self-made success story there.
Starting from selling industrial machinery parts, he expanded his business areas gradually from producing LPG containers to power generation projects. Currently, he is a global entrepreneur successfully managing SPACE TECHNOLOGY and its subsidiaries MDT and MSR as an Independent Power Producer (IPP) supplying electricity to Indonesia's state-owned electricity company (PLN) and as an Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contractor building power plants locally in Indonesia.
Last August, Chairman Lee visited Korea Aerospace University and expressed his intention to donate 1 billion KRW to his alma mater. In appreciation of his dedication and contributions, Korea Aerospace University decided to award him an honorary doctorate. This is the first case since the university's founding that an alumnus has received an honorary doctorate. The honorary degree signifies becoming a member of an academic community that continuously exchanges and grows together with the university.
At the honorary doctorate conferment ceremony, President Heo Hee-young of Korea Aerospace University quoted Oprah Winfrey, a famous American broadcaster known as the "Queen of Giving," saying, "Giving is not opening your wallet but opening your heart, and giving is an act of touching others' lives," and added, "The donation from Chairman Lee will also touch the lives of our junior students, offering new hope and opportunities."
He continued, "The generous love you have sent to your alma mater will be a precious stepping stone for Korea Aerospace University to leap forward as a global top-tier aerospace comprehensive university," expressing respect and gratitude once again.
Korea Aerospace University plans to use the entire development fund for improving the environment of the on-campus student union building. The existing student union will be transformed into a study caf?-style shared space where students can freely communicate, interact, and carry out creative and convergence projects. The space will be named the "Lee Seung-se Zone (tentative)" to ensure that future students remember the spirit of sharing from their senior for a long time.
In addition to the honorary doctorate ceremony, Korea Aerospace University held a commemorative tree planting event and erected a memorial plaque in front of the student union building. They also conducted a campus tour walking along the "Lee Seung-se Magnolia Road," where about 100 magnolia trees donated by Chairman Lee along with the development fund were planted.
All events were attended by Korea Aerospace University President Heo Hee-young, Graduate School Dean Hwang Soo-chan, Dean of the College of Aviation and Business Lee Dong-myung, faculty members, alumni association president Shin Dae-hyun, CEO alumni association president Park Jong-rae and CEO board members, as well as retired faculty and staff, who expressed their gratitude to Chairman Lee.
Founded in 1952, Korea Aerospace University (KOREA AEROSPACE UNIVERSITY) is the only comprehensive aerospace university in South Korea. It is a specialized university responsible for education and research across all aerospace fields, from engineering disciplines such as aircraft and satellite manufacturing and design, maintenance (MRO), software, and artificial intelligence (AI), to operations, air traffic control, logistics, and business administration.
