This project is part of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism's 'Southern Region Wide-area Tourism Development Project,' which aims to utilize Haenam County's major tourism resources to revitalize the local economy and tourism industry. It is being promoted to establish a wide-area tourism network connecting five metropolitan cities and provinces in the southern region, including South Gyeongsang, Busan, and South Jeolla.

In the area around Mokpo-gu Lighthouse, a complex cultural tourism facility will be built, including the Lighthouse of Art Exhibition Hall, Haepung Gallery, and gardens. Built in 1908, Mokpo-gu Lighthouse is a representative lighthouse from the Korean Empire era and served as the basic model for lighthouses built later in Korea. In 2008, it was designated as Cultural Heritage Material No. 379, a registered modern cultural asset.

For 95 years, until a new lighthouse was constructed in 2003, it served as a landmark for Mokpo-gu, the gateway to the mainland. In particular, the Hwaweon Wallae coast, where Mokpo-gu Lighthouse is located, is renowned as a sunset viewing spot where visitors can enjoy the fantastic sunset over the West Sea with two lighthouses as the backdrop.

Through the Mokpo-gu Lighthouse Tourism Landscape Landmark Project, the county plans to offer unique marine tourism experiences and diverse tourism content exclusive to Haenam, while also building a marine tourism infrastructure that connects Haenam's representative marine tourism destinations, such as the Oceano Tourism Complex and Usuyeong Tourist Site.

Governor Myung Hyun-gwan stated, "As various projects to create a tourism hub on the southwestern coast are being fully launched, the outlook has become even brighter with the Mokpo-gu Lighthouse Tourism Landscape Landmark Project passing the central investment review. I would like to thank National Assembly member Park Ji-won for his efforts in promoting the project, and we will continue to work closely together to ensure smooth project implementation and invigorate the local economy."
