On the 8th (local time), AFP reported that rhinoplasty is very popular in Iran and is increasingly closely linked to social status. The media analyzed that especially since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, Iranian women, who are forced to wear conservative clothing that covers their bodies and hair, have focused on facial beauty, leading to significant growth in the beauty industry.
AFP cited the case of Azadeh, a 29-year-old model, stating that refining the prominent nasal bridge, commonly called the 'Persian nose' in Iran, to meet Western beauty standards has proven to be a 'profitable investment.' Azadeh expressed satisfaction, saying, "After the nose surgery, I was able to become a model with a higher social status than before," adding, "My income tripled, and I received more respect from people." She also added, "Although I borrowed money from family and friends to undergo the surgery, it was truly worth it."

According to the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS) in the United States, over 264,000 cosmetic surgeries were performed annually in Iran as of 2023, with rhinoplasty being the most common. AFP reported that billboards promising 'sculpted noses,' 'flawless skin,' and 'perfect teeth' line the capital Tehran and major cities, and many people with bandaged noses after surgery can be seen on the streets.
Plastic surgeon Hamidreza Hosnani told the media, "In Iran, where the minimum wage is only about $100 (approximately 150,000 KRW) per month, the cost of rhinoplasty can reach up to $1,000 (approximately 1.5 million KRW)," adding, "This is relatively inexpensive compared to other countries." Iran is known as a country where affordable plastic surgery is available, attracting foreign customers as a medical tourism destination.
However, AFP warned that risks may accompany this trend. The number of unauthorized clinics operating amid the plastic surgery boom is increasing. According to the Iranian Ministry of Health, 12 unlicensed practitioners were arrested in February, and several operating rooms were shut down. In November last year, three women died while undergoing plastic surgery in Tehran.
