Medical education-related medical organizations have requested the government to finalize the medical school admission quota for next year at 3,058, the pre-quota increase level, within this week.
The Korean Medical Education Council (KOMEC) announced on the 8th that it sent an official letter with the name of Chairman Jinwoo Lee (current President of the Korean Academy of Medical Sciences) to the Acting President and Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister for Social Affairs and Minister of Education, Minister of Health and Welfare, and the leaders of the People Power Party and the Democratic Party.
In the letter, KOMEC stated, "The government's acceptance of the 2026 medical school admission quota at 3,058 is an important measure reflecting various discussions within the medical and educational communities, which has prevented the dropout situation among medical students. However, since there are still significant differences in class attendance rates among schools, if normal class operations are not restored by at least the second week of April, serious difficulties in academic management will arise."
They further requested, "To normalize medical school academics, we urge the government to officially confirm and announce the 2026 medical school admission quota as 3,058 within this week."
KOMEC, established to coordinate medical education policies, includes the Korean Academy of Medical Sciences, the Korean Medical Association (KMA), the Korean Hospital Association, the Korea Institute of Medical Education and Evaluation, the Association of Korean Medical Colleges and Medical Schools, the Korean Society of Medical Education, the Korean Association of Private Practitioners, the Korean Basic Medical Science Council, the National Council of Medical School Professors, the Medical Education Training Institute, the National University Hospital Association, and the Council of Private University Medical Centers.
