The May 18 Democratization Movement Archives announced on the 8th that it will operate the "Visiting May 18 Democratization Movement Reading Program - May for Everyone" for 5th and 6th grade elementary school students and middle school students from May to June to mark the 45th anniversary of the May 18 Democratization Movement.
This program is an educational initiative designed to help children and teenagers understand the spirit of May, democracy, human rights, and peace. A May Women’s History Interpreter will lead the lectures.
Participating students will read picture books such as "M16 Sixteen," which depicts the May 18 Democratization Movement from a new perspective, and will reflect on the May 18 Democratization Movement and its spirit through activities using puzzles, cards, and spinning wheels. These activities will help them think about the resistance against the suppression and violent crackdown of the democratization movement by the new military regime, and the courage to risk their lives in protest.
Kim Hokyun, Director of the May 18 Archives, said, "On the 45th anniversary of May 18, I hope this May will be a time for children and teenagers to reflect on and put into practice the spirit of May."
Meanwhile, elementary and middle schools wishing to participate can apply via official document by the 18th. For more details, refer to the website of the May 18 Democratization Movement Archives or contact the May 18 Research Office.
