Incheon Mayor Yoo Jeong-bok to Announce Presidential Bid on 9th... Participating in People Power Party Primary

Incheon Mayor Yoo Jeong-bok officially announced his candidacy for the presidential election on the 9th and is set to begin full-scale preparations for the election.


According to local political circles on the 8th, Mayor Yoo plans to pay respects at the Chung-hon Tower in Incheon Subong Park at 9 a.m. on the 9th, followed by press conferences in front of the MacArthur Statue at Jayu Park at 11 a.m. and at the National Assembly Communication Hall at 1:40 p.m., respectively.


It is known that Mayor Yoo will participate in the People Power Party’s presidential primary while maintaining his position as Mayor of Incheon.

Born in Incheon, Mayor Yoo graduated from Songnim Elementary School, Seonin Middle School, Jemulpo High School, and Yonsei University with a degree in Political Science and Diplomacy. He served as the appointed Governor of Gimpo County, Mayor of Seo-gu in Incheon, and elected Mayor of Gimpo City, and was a three-term member of the National Assembly representing Gimpo. He also served as Minister of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and the Ministry of Public Administration and Security (now the Ministry of the Interior and Safety), followed by his tenure as the elected Mayor of Incheon during the 6th term (2014?2018).


On the 7th, Mayor Yoo held a press conference at Incheon City Hall, expressing support for National Assembly Speaker Woo Won-shik’s proposal for constitutional amendment and emphasizing the need to promote a decentralized constitutional reform. He stated, "If the constitution is abused, the people’s judgment cannot be avoided," and added, "Representative Lee Jae-myung must immediately agree to the formation of a constitutional amendment special committee in the National Assembly."


As the chairman of the Korea Association of Governors, Mayor Yoo previously announced a local decentralization-type constitutional amendment proposal last month, which includes the introduction of a four-year renewable presidential term and a bicameral legislature.
