The 10·27 Beopnan Memorial Hall will be a cultural and assembly facility including performance, exhibition, education, and research spaces, and is planned to be built on the site of Bongeunsa Temple in Samseong-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul.

This design competition was organized with the purpose of healing the wounds left by the 10·27 Beopnan incident and creating a complex cultural memorial space that inherits the spirit of traditional Buddhist culture. The 10·27 Beopnan incident refers to the event on October 27, 1980, when the new military government forcibly detained monks and religious officials under the pretext of purifying the Buddhist community, committed harsh acts, and conducted nationwide searches of temples.

A total of nine companies participated in the design competition held until March 27, and among them, the consortium led by POSCO A&C Co., Ltd., which submitted a proposal under the theme "A Journey to Experience the World of Hwaeom," was selected as the preferred negotiation candidate.

Professor Joo Beom of Konkuk University, who served as the chair of the judging panel, evaluated, "The winning design was harmoniously planned with a layout that naturally blends Bongeunsa, a traditional temple in the heart of Seoul, into the urban environment."

A representative of the Jogye Order stated, "We will develop the 10·27 Beopnan Memorial Hall as a complex cultural memorial space to inherit traditional Buddhist culture and promote reconciliation and coexistence in our society."
