The population of Jangheung-gun, Jeollanam-do, designated as a population extinction risk area, has turned to an increasing trend. It is interpreted that the population policy, which was pursued with utmost effort by establishing a Population Policy Division and implementing various special measures, has borne fruit.
According to Jangheung-gun on the 7th, as of the end of March, the population of Jangheung-gun was counted at 34,319, an increase of 8 from the previous month (34,311). While the monthly number of births was around 10 and deaths reached about 60, the population, which had been steadily declining, shifted to an increasing trend for the first time in 6 years and 3 months.
The reason appears to be the establishment of the Population Policy Division and the implementation of various special measures since the 8th local government administration, resulting in a slight increase. Jangheung-gun is the only place nationwide to support moving-in households with a Hope Housing Cost of 13.2 million KRW over 5 years (300,000 KRW per month for 2 years, 200,000 KRW for years 2 to 4, and 100,000 KRW in the 5th year). It also promotes policies such as a marriage encouragement grant of 8 million KRW, childbirth encouragement grants ranging from 3 million to 12 million KRW, and monthly support of 200,000 KRW for children aged 1 to 18 starting in 2025.
Among these, on the 5th, a couple in their 40s living in Jangheung-eup gave birth to their seventh daughter. This is the first seventh child birth in a family in the Jangheung area in 10 years, and Jangheung-gun celebrated the birth and prepared various childcare support measures.
They provide a childbirth encouragement grant of 12 million KRW, a first meeting voucher worth 3 million KRW, 100,000 KRW for purchasing birth celebration goods, 2.84 million KRW for maternity and newborn helper service costs, 1 million KRW for private postpartum care, and a birth basic allowance of 43.2 million KRW.
Additionally, they support a total of 95.98 million KRW across 12 projects including 2.16 million KRW for diaper purchase costs, 18 million KRW for parental allowance, 9.6 million KRW for child allowance, 1.08 million KRW for Nutrition Plus food support, 100,000 KRW for purchasing childcare products, and 2.5 million KRW for hospital expenses.
Kim Seong, the governor of Jangheung-gun, said, "We celebrate the birth of the seventh child of Mr. and Mrs. A with all the residents of the county," and added, "We will focus on creating a good environment for childbirth and childcare and making this a great place to raise children through the implementation of practical childbirth encouragement policies."
