Hadong and Sancheong Wildfires 'Again' ... Efforts Underway to Prevent Spread

After ten days of struggle, wildfires have broken out again in Hadong and Sancheong, Gyeongnam, which had just escaped the flames.


The Korea Forest Service announced that fires broke out at around 12:05 p.m. in Okjong-myeon, Hadong-gun, and at around 2:36 p.m. in a nearby mountain in Geumseo-myeon, Sancheong-gun, on the 7th.

The forest authorities issued Wildfire Response Level 1 at the Okjong-myeon site in Hadong-gun at 1:45 p.m., followed by Level 2 at 3:30 p.m., and urgently deployed 21 firefighting helicopters, 37 pieces of firefighting equipment, and 397 personnel to extinguish the fire.


The cause of this wildfire is presumed to be a spark from a brush cutter fire. The affected area is 47 hectares, with a total fire line of 4.9 km, of which 1.9 km has been extinguished. The current containment rate is 40%.

In addition, at the wildfire site in Geumseo-myeon, Sancheong-gun, three firefighting helicopters and 85 personnel are working to control the fire.


Currently, winds at the Hadong wildfire site are reaching up to 15 meters per second, with the fire line estimated at 1.4 km and the affected area at about 12 hectares.


At the Sancheong wildfire site, winds are blowing at 4.4 meters per second, and authorities are still confirming the exact length of the fire and the affected area.


The authorities plan to investigate the exact cause of the fire and the extent of the damage once the fires are fully extinguished.
