Hampyeong County in Jeollanam-do announced on the 7th that it will hold a special exhibition titled "Life and Art" by artist Byun Geonho, the creator of the Hwanggeumbakjwi Award.
The special exhibition "Life and Art" by Byun Geonho will be held at the Hampyeong County Art Museum until the 25th of next month. This exhibition highlights works that artist Byun Geonho, who created the Hwanggeumbakjwi Award, has developed throughout his life, exploring fundamental themes such as the birth and extinction of life, chaos and order, through artistic expression.
Byun Geonho, born in 1948 in Jinju, Gyeongsangnam-do, has established his own artistic world while serving as a professor in the Department of Metal Craft and Design at Hongik University College of Fine Arts. Notably, he created the Hwanggeumbakjwi Award over a period of three years from 2005 to 2008 at the request of Hampyeong County.
Byun has explored the finiteness and perpetuity of life, as well as the relationship between chaos and order, through his sculptures. In his representative work "Life Series," he visually embodies the flow and extinction of life using motifs such as IV bags, flames, and fish, constructing organic yet structural forms with metal sculptures.
This exhibition also features not only Byun's sculptures but also his recently attempted paintings, offering a glimpse into his expanded artistic world. Byun employs techniques that involve photographing his sculptures and then layering acrylic, colored pencils, and gold leaf, expressing the cycle of life and the order of the universe on a flat surface. In particular, through the use of all-over painting techniques and various materials, he expresses the meaning of life even more intuitively.
In addition to the exhibition, the county plans to host a "Conversation with Artist Byun Geonho" on the 23rd at Hampyeong County Art Museum, where visitors can hear about the artist's life, artistic world, and behind-the-scenes stories of the creation of the Hwanggeumbakjwi Award.
County Governor Lee Sangik stated, "Byun Geonho has explored the origins of life and its cyclical nature through both sculpture and painting," adding, "I hope this exhibition will be an opportunity to share his profound philosophical questions about the essence of life and the universe."
