Did a Seagull Become a Film Director?... Busan City's Communication Character 'Bugi' Produces Bugi Film

Participation as Director in "Bugi Film" Content on BugiTube
Title: "About Waking Up as a Seagull"

The character "Bugi" from Busan City is making a debut as a film director.

Busan City (Mayor Park Hyungjoon) announced on the 7th that its communication character Bugi will be active as the director producing "Bugi Film."

This project is about creating "Bugi Film," a content series on the YouTube channel "BugiTube," and was planned to promote Busan as a UNESCO Creative City of Film.

The title of the film being produced is "About Waking Up as a Seagull." It is a comedic short film that tells the story of Minsu, an ordinary job seeker who wakes up to find himself transformed into "Bugi," a character loved by everyone, and explores the emotions he experiences.

In this film, Bugi will directly participate in all aspects of production, including directing, writing, producing, and investing. Experts based in Busan will provide support in various fields for Bugi's first experience in filmmaking.

The production and adaptation of this work are being handled by Producer Lee Junhee, who directed "My Idol," a film screened at the 14th Seoul International Pride Film Festival. Assistant director Lee Mihye, who worked on "Offside!" screened at the 41st Busan International Short Film Festival, will also join the project.

Cinematography is led by Director of Photography Jung Inhyeok, who participated in the Busan MBC and Japan's Aichi TV co-production "What Shall We Eat Today?". Sound is managed by Sound Mixer Lee Sinhui, who worked on "What the Clouds Say," screened at the 2024 Jeonju International Film Festival and the Busan Independent Film Festival, further enhancing the film's quality.

One of the key highlights will be Bugi's heartfelt efforts to secure production funding, one of the most realistic challenges in filmmaking.

In YouTube content, viewers can watch Bugi personally visiting sponsors such as Daesun Distilling, Changshin INC, and KidZania?companies Bugi worked with in last year's "Experience! Bugi's Field"?to request support.

Additionally, crowdfunding for individual sponsors is ongoing through Tumblbug. Participation starts at a minimum of 1,000 KRW, and depending on the amount sponsored, supporters will receive rewards such as having their names listed in the ending credits and fan merchandise (mugs, magnets, mouse pads, etc.).

Busan City plans to submit the film to domestic film festivals, including those in Busan, as soon as production is complete. At the end of this year, a screening or a guest visit (GV) event will be held to communicate with citizens.

This year on "BugiTube," new content will be introduced, including "Jaesueopjo," which depicts Bugi's college life, and "B-Stage," a busking content series featuring Busan citizens.

"Jaesueopjo" features Bugi, who is twenty but has never experienced college life, auditing classes at a university in Busan, interacting with local youth, and introducing talented individuals and youth policies in the region.

In the first half of the year, visits are planned to Kyungsung University Department of Theater and Film (Theater Major), Korea Maritime and Ocean University Maritime College, Dongseo University Im Kwontaek Film Department, and Pusan National University Department of Aerospace Engineering.

"B-Stage" is a YouTube content series capturing passionate performances by citizens set against the beautiful scenery of Busan. The first filming took place on March 23 at Gwangalli Beach, where about 200 audience members, including tourists, applauded as nine teams?including participants from Seoul and members of Busan and Gyeongnam busking clubs?showcased their talents.

Park Gwangmyung, spokesperson for Busan City, said, "We will use Bugi, the city's representative promotional model, to creatively promote the city's image and various policies," and added, "We ask for the interest and support of citizens and Bugi fans."
