56.7% of Youth Aged 27-39 in Gyeonggi-do Are 'Single'

As of 2022, 56.7% of residents aged 27 to 39 (born between 1983 and 1995) in Gyeonggi-do were found to be unmarried.

Gyeonggi-do announced the "Gyeonggi-do Young Generation Family Formation Statistics" containing this information. This is the first nationally approved statistic utilizing the Statistics Korea Population Dynamics Cohort Database (DB).

According to this statistic, among 2,336,000 people born between 1983 (39 years old) and 1995 (27 years old) residing in Gyeonggi-do, 56.7% were unmarried. By gender, the unmarried rate for males was 64.5%, higher than that of females at 48.1%.

The unmarried rate at age 30 surged by 14.5 percentage points over seven years, from 61.6% in 2015 to 76.1% in 2022. This increase was continuous rather than a sudden spike at a specific age (generation). The phenomena of late marriage and remaining single were accurately confirmed through the statistics.

Based on birth registration data, the childbirth status of women born between 1983 and 1995 in Gyeonggi-do was also confirmed, showing that 60.2% had no children as of 2022. Among married women, 24.3% were identified as "married without children."

Additionally, among parents born between 1983 and 1995, 22.7% used parental leave between 2015 and 2022, indicating that about two out of ten parents utilized the parental leave system effectively.

However, the majority of users were women, and the parental leave usage rate was relatively higher among parents working in large corporations and the public sector, revealing an imbalance in the utilization of the system.

The Population Dynamics Cohort DB used for compiling the statistics is a dataset linking four types of statistics?birth, death, marriage, and divorce?based on birth records.

Currently, Statistics Korea has constructed and is providing population dynamics events data for those born between 1983 and 1995 up to 2022.

The Gyeonggi-do Population Policy Officer developed the "Gyeonggi-do Young Generation Family Formation Statistics" by combining various statistical registries with the Statistics Korea Population Dynamics Cohort DB to understand the marriage, childbirth, and parental leave status of residents born between 1983 and 1995 in Gyeonggi-do.

Based on the "Gyeonggi-do Young Generation Family Formation Statistics," Gyeonggi-do plans to additionally develop "City/County Young Generation Family Formation Statistics" to support population policy formulation at the city and county levels.
