Aiming to Enhance Self-Directed Academic Skills for Education Welfare Students Including Basic Livelihood Security Recipients, Near-Poor, and Legally Single-Parent Families
Providing Customized Mentoring through Specialized Learning and College Entrance Mentoring Programs
Nowon-gu (Mayor Oh Seung-rok) announced that it is operating a 'University Student Mentoring Group' to enhance the self-directed academic capabilities of education welfare target youth.
Over the past 10 years, academic polarization among children has deepened depending on their parents' economic power. Accordingly, the need for focused support for education welfare targets such as basic livelihood security recipients, near-poor, legally single-parent families, multicultural families, and families with disabilities has increased.
In response, the district has started providing university student mentoring services to help improve basic academic skills and foster maturity in college entrance and career paths, aiming to close the educational gap for students facing economic and social difficulties. There are two types: ▲Learning Mentoring ▲College Entrance Mentoring.
First, Learning Mentoring is a program that helps students with their frequently weak subjects, math or English. It targets students from 5th grade in elementary school to 3rd grade in middle school, who were recommended by school education welfare officers and education welfare institutions and then finally selected.
The selected students choose one subject, either math or English, and receive customized mentoring in a '1:1 face-to-face' format. The education locations are set at school classrooms, institutions, or the Nowon Education Platform to improve accessibility for participants. Sessions are held once a week from Monday to Friday, from 3:00 PM to 4:30 PM, lasting 1.5 hours each, and are flexibly operated during vacations or exam preparation periods.
College Entrance Mentoring is a program that provides mentoring directly related to university entrance, such as admission information. Therefore, it targets students from 3rd grade in middle school to high school students who are preparing for entrance exams.
It operates in a one-on-one non-face-to-face format based on audio, allowing participants to obtain desired information through matching with mentors of their choice from among 500 university student mentors representing 80 domestic and international universities and 200 departments.
In the first half of the year, College Entrance Mentoring is operated for education welfare target youth such as basic livelihood security recipients, near-poor, legally single-parent families, disabled, North Korean defectors, and multicultural families, and in the second half, the target will be expanded to all students. Those wishing to participate in College Entrance Mentoring can inquire through the Nowon Education Platform.
The district operates the '2026 University Entrance Briefing Session' to provide students and parents with reliable and high-quality information about university entrance and subjects for the 2026 academic year.
About 20 universities, including the Air Force, Army, Navy, and Armed Forces Nursing Academies, as well as Sungkyunkwan University, Sogang University, Ewha Womans University, and University of Seoul, will participate in this briefing session, which will be held from April 17 to May 30 according to each university's schedule.
Those wishing to attend the briefing session can register through the Nowon Education Platform website starting at 2:00 PM on April 9. Fifty people per school will be recruited on a first-come, first-served basis, prioritizing examinees and parents residing or studying in Nowon-gu. Duplicate applications for each session are also possible.
Oh Seung-rok, Mayor of Nowon-gu, said, “The Nowon Education Platform contributes to closing the educational gap and reducing private education expenses by providing career and college entrance consulting and various up-to-date educational information,” adding, “We will continue to support our students' futures with diverse programs.”
