Construction Accident Deaths Decreased... 65% of Projects Under 5 Billion Won

The number of fatalities in the construction industry has been declining since 2022. However, construction sites with projects valued under 5 billion KRW accounted for more than 65% of all construction accident deaths.


According to the Korea Construction Industry Research Institute (KICIR) on the 5th, the number of construction accident fatalities last year was recorded at 276. The construction industry accounted for 43.8% of the total 589 industrial fatalities.


The proportion of construction accident fatalities decreased from 51.4% in 2022 to 50.7% in 2023, with the number of fatalities declining from 341 to 303 during that period.


By construction scale, accident fatalities at sites with projects valued under 5 billion KRW accounted for a high proportion. This proportion decreased from 66.3% in 2022 to 59.7% in 2023 but rose again to 65.6% last year. The number of fatalities was 226 in 2022 and 181 in both 2023 and last year.


On the other hand, the number of accident fatalities at sites with projects valued over 5 billion KRW showed a declining trend. It increased from 115 in 2022 to 122 in 2023 but decreased to 95 last year.
