A worker was fatally struck by falling debris at a construction site in Paju, Gyeonggi Province, prompting the police to launch an investigation.


According to the Gyeonggi Northern Provincial Police Agency on the 4th, on the 15th of last month at around 3:20 p.m., worker A (55) was hit by concrete debris falling from the upper floors at a mixed-use apartment construction site being built by Hyundai Construction in Wadong-dong, Paju. He was transported to the hospital but ultimately died that morning.


The problematic concrete debris measured 12 cm in diameter and 5 cm in thickness and was confirmed to have fallen from the upper floors of the 49-story building.


At the time of the accident, A was wearing a safety helmet, but the impact from the falling debris caused fatal head injuries.


The police have booked two men from the subcontractor responsible for the work on charges of professional negligence resulting in death.


Additionally, an investigation is underway to determine whether Hyundai Construction violated the Serious Accidents Punishment Act due to A’s death.
