Seonsan Public Health Center Runs 8-Week Program
High Participation Rate Among Residents
The Seonsan Public Health Center in Gumi, North Gyeongsang Province, is receiving a great response as it operates a 'Nordic Walking Program' to promote the health and leisure activities of local residents.
This program has been running since last March at the Nakdong River Sports Park, taking place twice a week for a total of eight weeks. It operates from 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM, with about 50 residents currently participating and walking energetically.
Nordic walking is an exercise that uses special sticks to engage both upper and lower body muscles simultaneously. It burns 18-67% more calories than regular walking, making it effective for reducing body fat and strengthening muscles.
Additionally, it puts less strain on the joints, making it easy for people with weak knees or joint conditions to participate, which has drawn attention.
Participants have responded positively, saying, "The exercise is definitely effective and fun, so I want to continue," and "It's great that I can do it for a long time without putting stress on my knees." There are also calls for the program to continue in the future.
Lee Eunju, head of the Seonsan Public Health Center, said, "I hope that through Nordic walking, residents will develop proper walking habits and maintain a healthy lifestyle," adding, "We will continue to expand various health promotion programs to create a healthier Gumi."
