Defective Manholes to Be Eliminated... Gwangjin-gu Conducts Comprehensive Inspection of 19,658 Sites Repaired Manhole

Gwangjin-gu (District Mayor Kim Kyung-ho) conducted a comprehensive inspection of manholes to proactively respond to safety accidents.

Manholes are access facilities created for repairing, inspecting, and cleaning underground water pipes, sewage pipes, and electrical wires. Defective manholes that are protruding or sunken cause accidents due to level differences on roads and pavements, and cause inconvenience to vehicle and pedestrian traffic.

Accordingly, from February 24 to March 24, the district conducted a full survey of 19,658 manholes managed by the district. Two inspection teams of four members each were formed and carefully inspected according to the manhole inspection checklist.

The main inspection items included ▲ cracks, damage, or displacement of manhole covers ▲ surface wear condition ▲ noise and vibration during vehicle and pedestrian traffic ▲ level differences between the cover and surrounding pavement.

The inspection results showed that a total of 70 manholes required maintenance. The defective manholes found were reported to the managing agencies, and the district will invest 120 million KRW from its budget to maintain them by the end of the year.

In addition, according to the manhole management guidelines, safety grades are determined as ‘Ga’, ‘Na’, ‘Da’, and ‘Ra’ to prioritize and manage them systematically and planfully, ensuring thorough preparation even during the rainy season.

Kim Kyung-ho, Mayor of Gwangjin-gu, said, “Defective manholes not only cause inconvenience in traffic but can also lead to major accidents, so continuous monitoring is necessary. Safety can never be overemphasized. We will do our best to create a safe and pleasant Gwangjin-gu through proactive measures and systematic management.”

Last year, the district also maintained 72 manholes, striving for safety management.
