Gokseong County, Jeollanam-do announced on the 4th that on the previous day, a "Sharing Campaign" to improve awareness of disabilities was held at Gokseong Train Village Traditional Market, organized by Injeongwon, a residential facility for people with severe disabilities. The campaign was designed to promote a better understanding of people with disabilities and to create a society where everyone can live together in harmony.
Representatives from Injeongwon distributed flower seeds they had collected themselves and served warm tea to market visitors, spreading positive perceptions about people with disabilities. By sharing flower seeds, they aimed to highlight the beauty of a society where people with and without disabilities coexist, and to express their hope that just as small seeds grow, changes in awareness will also spread.
One local resident who participated in the event said, "Receiving the flower seeds gave me another opportunity to think about people with disabilities, and I learned that the term 'jang-ae-u' is incorrect and that 'jang-aein' is the proper term. I hope meaningful events like this will continue."
This campaign has been carried out since last year under a business agreement between Injeongwon and the Gokseong Train Village Traditional Market Merchants Association. For this second event, about 10 staff members from the Gokseong County Resident Welfare Division also joined, making the event even more lively.
A county official stated, "Small actions are important to improve awareness of people with disabilities," and added, "I hope this event becomes an opportunity for all members of society to have an open mind about disabilities. I also hope that, along with the warm tea, it becomes a time for everyone’s hearts to be warmed."
Meanwhile, Gokseong County and Injeongwon plan to continue various activities to create a society where people with and without disabilities can live together in harmony.
