Senior Superintendent Indicted Without Detention for Bribery
Including Seven Individuals Such as Relatives of Former President Moon Jae-in
The prosecution has indicted former Commissioner of the Korea Coast Guard Kim Hong-hee on charges of accepting bribes from a trap manufacturing company while in custody. The Criminal Division 5 of the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office (Chief Prosecutor Kim Tae-heon) indicted former Commissioner Kim on the 3rd on charges including abuse of authority and obstruction of the exercise of rights.
Former Commissioner Kim is suspected of requesting a two-step promotion to Commissioner of the Korea Coast Guard from a ship engine manufacturing company and receiving approximately 47.9 million KRW as a bribe in return for securing work orders for the company after his appointment. Seven related parties in the case, including two active senior superintendents who received money and goods from the same company, were also indicted but remain out of custody.
The prosecution took over the investigation from the police in April last year and conducted a direct investigation. The investigation revealed the existence of brokers who received about 1.4 billion KRW in return for various requests, including Kim’s promotion and the suppression of audits.
The brokers are identified as individuals related by kinship to former President Moon Jae-in or those who built his residence, and they are understood to have facilitated Kim’s personnel requests. The prosecution stated, “We will do our best to maintain the prosecution and ensure the full recovery of criminal proceeds.”
