Shin Sujeong, Chairperson of the Gwangju City Council, announced on the 3rd that she held a 'Buk-gu Alley-Type Shopping District Merchants Association Issues Meeting' in the council's main conference room on the 2nd, where she discussed measures to revitalize alleyway commercial districts with association leaders.
Approximately 30 people attended the meeting, including Chairperson Shin Sujeong, Park Pilsun, Chairperson of the Industry and Construction Committee, council members Cho Seokho and Chae Eunji, Yang Chungho, President of the Buk-gu Alley-Type Shopping District Merchants Association, and relevant officials.
The meeting was organized to listen to current issues caused by the stagnation of alleyway commercial districts and to seek solutions. The Merchants Association proposed: ▲ support for market managers for alley-type shopping district associations ▲ support for establishing an education center for the association ▲ easing of self-payment and fire insurance rates for subsidy projects ▲ establishment of parking lots for each shopping district ▲ measures to revitalize alleyway commercial districts. The association also requested countermeasures to prevent damage to alley-type shopping districts and small business owners due to the construction of large shopping malls.
Chairperson Shin stated, "Alley-type shopping districts are the core of the local economy, so we will prepare practical policies that reflect the opinions of merchants," and added, "We will continuously strengthen communication with merchants to seek sustainable measures for revitalizing commercial districts."
Park Pilsun, Chairperson of the Industry and Construction Committee, said, "Based on the opinions raised at this meeting, we will review related policies and revise relevant ordinances so that various support measures for the revitalization of alley-type shopping districts can be promoted."
The Gwangju City Council has been continuously holding meetings to listen to livelihood issues since this year to restore the local economy and normalize democracy. On the 9th, a meeting will be held with representatives of the Gwangsan-gu Alley-Type Shopping District Merchants Association.
Meanwhile, an alley-type shopping district is a small business revitalization measure that designates an area of up to 2,000 square meters with a concentration of small business-operated stores as a single shopping district, allowing for support of various projects. In these designated shopping districts, Onnuri gift certificates, which offer up to a 10% discount like in traditional markets, can be used, making it a beneficial system for both small business owners and residents.
