Establishment of a 24.8-Hectare Smart Horticultural Complex
The traditional agricultural city of Buyeo-gun, Chungnam, is establishing itself as a leader in Korean agriculture by combining its long-accumulated horticultural cultivation techniques with cutting-edge smart farming.
In particular, cherry tomatoes produced in Buyeo are renowned nationwide for their firm flesh and high sugar content, making them a healthy food loved by people of all ages.
◆ Buyeo Cherry Tomatoes: Number One in National Production, Boasting the Best Quality
Buyeo-gun ranks first in national production for six specialized crops: watermelon, chestnut, tomato, mushroom, shiitake mushroom, and jujube. Cherry tomatoes are among these leading crops.
As of 2024, 469 farms cultivate cherry tomatoes on a total area of 299 hectares, accounting for 7.7% of the national production and ranking first in the country.
Buyeo cherry tomatoes are characterized by their high sugar content and firm flesh. They are not too tangy, making them suitable for everyone. With low calories and abundant nutrients, they are ideal for diets and healthy eating.
Rich in vitamin A, vitamin C, beta-carotene, lycopene, and potassium, they help boost immunity, promote cardiovascular health, and regulate blood pressure.
◆ Premium Tomatoes Born from State-of-the-Art Smart Farming
Buyeo-gun, located in the basin area of the lower Geumgang River plain, boasts an excellent natural environment with abundant sunlight, clean water, and sandy soil. By introducing smart farm technology, the region produces the finest cherry tomatoes.
Notably, Buyeo-gun established the nation’s first smart horticultural complex covering 24.8 hectares and operates a 17.9-hectare advanced glass greenhouse and a smart farm integrated control center utilizing ICT convergence technology, actively supporting the adoption of smart agriculture by local farms.
In addition, the county maintains agricultural competitiveness through various policies, including support projects for new and renovated smart farm greenhouses, youth self-reliant smart farm support, small horticultural (family) farm smart farm support, and ICT convergence expansion projects.
As a result, as of 2024, 158 farms are cultivating cherry tomatoes and strawberries in 106 hectares of smart farm greenhouses, and Buyeo-gun now accounts for 45% of the smart farm greenhouse area in Chungcheongnam-do.
