Vehicles are congested on the southbound lanes of the Seoul-Gyeongbu Expressway heading toward Busan, causing traffic jams.
The Seoul Metropolitan Government has confirmed that it has begun an economic feasibility assessment for the underground section of the Gyeongbu Expressway in Seoul (from the southern end of Hannam Bridge to Yangjae Interchange).
According to the development industry on the 3rd, the city recently reported the 'Gyeongbu Expressway to Olympic-daero Underground Road Plan' to the city council and requested a private investment feasibility study from the Korea Development Institute Public Investment Management Center (KDI PIMAC).
The plan centers on connecting exclusive underground roads for vehicles on both sides of a deep tunnel and creating a three-way route to disperse traffic volume. The deep tunnel on the west side passes through Umyeon-dong to Seocho Jungang-ro, while the east side goes through Yangjae-dong and Gangnam-daero, connecting to the north side of Sinsa Station. Based on the results of the private investment feasibility review in the second half of this year, the city aims to designate a preferred negotiation partner and start construction in 2029.
The undergrounding of the Gyeongbu Expressway is being carried out separately for the Hannam to Yangjae section managed by the city and the Yangjae Interchange to Yongin Giheung Interchange section managed by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.
The city's plan includes handling metropolitan area wide transportation through the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's deep underground expressway (Yangjae to Goyang) and dispersing high-speed internal traffic in the southeastern region via a central underground road (Yangjae to Banpo). However, after review, the plan was changed to add exclusive underground roads for vehicles on both sides of the deep tunnel undergrounding the expressway passing through Hannam to Yangjae IC to disperse traffic volume.
