Democratic Party Wins in Asan and Daejeon,
People Power Party Secures Victory in Dangjin

In the '2025 First Half By-elections' held on the 2nd, the Democratic Party secured victories in two constituencies, while the People Power Party won one seat in the Daejeon and Chungnam regions.


According to the ballot count by the National Election Commission, the Democratic Party won the Asan mayoral race and the Daejeon City Council Yuseong District 2 seat, while the People Power Party won the Chungnam Provincial Council Dangjin District 2 seat.


In the Asan mayoral by-election, which was held due to the invalidation of former Asan Mayor Park Kyunggui's election, as of 12:10 a.m. on the 3rd with 73.95% of ballots counted, Democratic Party candidate Oh Sehyun secured victory with 50,614 votes (59.62%), leading People Power Party candidate Jeon Mankwon, who received 32,168 votes (37.89%), by a margin of 18,446 votes (21.73 percentage points).


Cho Deokho of the Saemirae Democratic Party and Kim Kwangman of the Liberty Unification Party received 1,344 votes (1.58%) and 758 votes (0.89%), respectively.


Mayor Oh Sehyun stated, "The result of this election is a judgment on those who trampled on the sovereignty of the people and deceived the eyes of the citizens with lies. Today's victory is not Oh Sehyun's, but a victory for the citizens of Asan. I will dedicate everything I have for a revitalized Asan."


In the Dangjin District 2 by-election, triggered by the violation of the Public Official Election Act by People Power Party's Lee Wansik, the People Power Party secured another victory.


As of 10:40 p.m. the previous day, with 100% of ballots counted, People Power Party candidate Lee Haeseon won with 6,148 votes (47.49%), narrowly defeating Democratic Party candidate Koo Bonhyeon, who received 5,996 votes (46.61%), by a margin of 152 votes (0.88 percentage points). Oh Yunhui of the Progressive Party received 720 votes (5.59%).


The vacancy left by the late Democratic Party Daejeon City Councilor Song Daeyoon, who passed away during his term, will be filled by Democratic Party candidate Bang Jinyoung, who received 8,000 votes (47.17%).


As of 10:00 p.m. the previous day, with 100% of ballots counted, she defeated People Power Party candidate Kang Hyungseok, who received 6,847 votes (40.37%), by a margin of 1,153 votes (6.8 percentage points).


Moon Suyeon of the National Innovation Party received 2,110 votes (12.44%), qualifying for reimbursement of half of her campaign expenses.
