Seo Jeong-yeop, former First Deputy Mayor of Seoul and currently an adjunct professor at Sungkyunkwan University, was appointed as co-director of the International Development Cooperation Research Center affiliated with the Trade Research Institute at Sungkyunkwan University.
Seo Jeong-hyeop, former First Deputy Mayor of Seoul, has been appointed as co-director of the Center for Global Development Cooperation (GDC), an affiliated center of the Trade Research Institute at Sungkyunkwan University.
The Trade Research Institute at Sungkyunkwan University (Director: Professor Jeong Hong-ju), which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, established the Center for Global Development Cooperation (GDC Research Center) as an affiliated institution. On the 24th of last month, Associate Professor Seo Jeong-hyeop (Division of Global Leaders) and Professor Shin Wan-seon (Department of Systems Management Engineering) were appointed as co-directors.
With this, the number of research centers under the Trade Research Institute has expanded to four, including the existing centers for International Logistics, Insurance and Pension, and Indonesia Studies.
By establishing the Center for Global Development Cooperation, the university has laid the foundation for a new leap forward, and the GDC Research Center is expected to become a central hub leading research and activities in the field of international development cooperation, including the university’s ODA (Official Development Assistance) efforts.
Associate Professor Seo Jeong-hyeop, newly appointed as co-director, currently teaches at the Division of Global Leaders at the university and is an urban administration expert with over 30 years of public service experience in the central government and Seoul Metropolitan Government.
He notably oversaw Seoul’s international cooperation affairs, led urban diplomacy, and successfully spearheaded the “policy export” project that disseminated Seoul’s excellent policies to developing countries. After retirement, he has been dedicated to nurturing future talents at the Department of Urban Administration and the Department of International Development Cooperation at the University of Seoul. He also supports training programs for public officials from developing countries as an advisor for the Global Urban Leaders Program (GULP), jointly operated by Seoul Metropolitan Government and the University of Seoul.
Additionally, he currently serves as an advisor at the law firm Jipyung, providing consultation in urban development and public policy.
Professor Seo stated, “I aim to systematize Korea’s urban administration experience and policy assets from the perspective of international development cooperation and contribute to presenting practical urban cooperation models with developing countries.” He added, “I will do my best to help the GDC Research Center grow into a platform for sustainable urban development and international development cooperation through collaboration with domestic and international academia, international organizations, and public institutions.”
Professor Shin Wan-seon, appointed as co-director, is a faculty member of the Department of Systems Management Engineering and the Graduate School of Technology Management at Sungkyunkwan University and formerly served as the head of the Planning and Coordination Office. He is a fellow of the International Academy for Quality and has served as chairman of the Asia Quality Association. He has contributed to spreading Korea’s innovation cases overseas through advisory activities in countries such as China, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Sri Lanka. Going forward, he plans to expand opportunities for the university’s outstanding talents to shine on the global stage through various international cooperation projects, including ODA initiatives.
