Damyang County in Jeollanam-do will launch a river and estuary waste cleanup project starting in April to address issues such as the inflow of large amounts of waste into rivers during heavy rainfall caused by the rainy season and typhoons, which leads to water pollution and damages river landscapes.
According to the county on the 2nd, various types of waste, including plastics, vinyl, and waste wood, are being left unattended around rivers and are temporarily swept into the water during localized heavy downpours caused by climate change, harming the health of aquatic ecosystems and highlighting the need for river waste collection.
Accordingly, the county plans to invest 100 million won this year with a goal of collecting 230 tons of waste, focusing on removing and processing trash discarded near rivers such as the main stream of the Yeongsangang River, Orecheon, and Wolsancheon.
The collected waste will be processed promptly to prevent long-term accumulation, and the project will prioritize hiring vulnerable groups such as low-income individuals, people with disabilities, and the long-term unemployed, thereby contributing to the creation of public jobs for local residents.
A county official stated, "Through this project, we will properly manage waste generated in rivers to prevent water pollution and create a pleasant river environment."
