Winning Design Selected for New School Construction
A Total of 28 Classes from Kindergarten to Specialized Courses
Ulsan Metropolitan Office of Education (Superintendent Cheon Changsu) will establish a tentatively named Third Public Special School in the Okdong area of Nam-gu, aiming for completion in February 2028.
The Third Public Special School, as tentatively named, will be constructed as a four-story building with a total floor area of 14,485 square meters. It will accommodate 28 classes in total: 1 kindergarten class, 9 elementary school classes, 6 middle school classes, 6 high school classes, and 6 specialized courses, serving up to 181 students. The total project cost is approximately 52.4 billion KRW.
The school will be developed as a "forest school" concept, actively utilizing the natural environment of Samhosan to help foster emotional development and psychological stability. Customized spaces for each grade level will provide students with an optimal learning environment.
The Ulsan Office of Education held a design competition for the Third Public Special School to be built in Okdong, Nam-gu, and selected the final winning design.
A total of six entries were submitted for this competition. After evaluation, the joint submission by ING Group Architects (CEO Kim Ankyung) and MPT Engineering Architects (CEO Kim Wonhyo) was selected as the winning design.
In the design competition, YP Design Group Architects (jointly with Mir Architects) was selected as the grand prize winner, Kerencia Architects (jointly with Seosajae Architects) as the excellence award winner, Dan Architects (jointly with Architecture Group Architects) as the honorable mention, and Atelier Soon Architects as the runner-up.
An official from the Ulsan Office of Education stated, "We expect that the tentatively named Third Public Special School will expand educational opportunities for students eligible for special education in the Gangnam area and alleviate the inconvenience of long-distance commuting. We will continue to create the optimal educational environment that reflects the special education needs of our students."
