Once the art residency is completed, Jongno-gu plans to use it as a hub to support stable creative activities for artists, provide community spaces for residents, and work towards revitalizing the Jamunbak area.
Jamunbak is a place name covering areas such as Gugi-dong, Buam-dong, Sinyeong-dong, Pyeongchang-dong, and Hongji-dong. It is a region rich in cultural and artistic resources, including beautiful natural environments like Bukhansan, Inwangsan, and Bugaksan mountains, as well as museums, art galleries, and workshops. Historically, many artists have lived here, and it has grown into a self-sustaining cultural and artistic village.
On the 1st, the district signed a ‘Business Agreement for the Establishment and Donation of Jamunbak Art Residency’ with the Jamunbak Cultural Forum (Chairman Lee Soon-jong) to create the Jamunbak Art Residency. Under this agreement, Jongno-gu will handle preliminary reviews and support for administrative procedures such as site surveys and permits, while the Jamunbak Cultural Forum will be responsible for planning, fundraising, and design proposals, and will later build the art residency and donate it to the district free of charge.
So far, the district has introduced various local linkage programs such as public contests, cultural facility construction, and the Bukchon Relay Exhibition to promote the value and characteristics of Jamunbak and support residents’ creative activities. The completion of the art residency is expected to accelerate related projects that embody the charm of Jamunbak.
The Jamunbak Cultural Forum publishes local newsletters, operates a creative arts school, and currently manages the temporarily established Jamunbak Art Residency in Pyeongchang-dong under consignment. Professor Emeritus Lee Soon-jong of Seoul National University serves as chairman, with Vice Chairmen Lee Ho-jae, Chairman of Seoul Auction, and Park Young-nam, Professor Emeritus of Painting at Kookmin University, in charge.
District Mayor Jeong Mun-heon stated, “The establishment of the Jamunbak Art Residency will serve as a model case of public-private cooperation utilizing Jongno’s abundant human and material cultural and artistic resources.”
